NEW! Müller Strawberry Oreo Yogurts (ASDA)

Last summer saw the launch of the Oreo split-pot yogurts. Unfortunately -as seems the case with many of the Oreo branded food products*- they weren't all that great. The trouble was, the yogurts are made by Müller. Müller have gone downhill in recent years, gone are the days of their thick and creamy yogurt; instead we're left with runny, artificially flavoured stuff that's best avoided. Still, I'm a sucker for anything labelled as Oreo, and I rather enjoyed the strawberry Oreo biscuits, so I just had to try them. You know... for the blog.. of course ;). I found them in ASDA at £2 for a pack of 4, but they're also in Tesco too (currently £2.89 for four).

The yogurt side wasn't to the top, but it wasn't ridiculously empty either. As for the cookie side however, well that was pathetic. I was disappointed but unsurprised to find that, despite the artwork on the front of the four-pack depicting strawberry Oreos, the cookie pieces were plain. At only 8% of the yogurt, I suppose you couldn't have told the difference even if Müller had decided to go the whole hog anyway. Ooh, aren't I the cynic?

If you've had any of the strawberry split pot Müller corners recently, you'll know what to expect from the larger side of this yogurt. It was thin in consistency, with an artificial -albeit fairly pleasant- flavour. The strawberry worked well with the Oreo pieces (as it had with the biscuits), I just wished that the yogurt was thicker and creamier. This isn't supposed to be a diet yogurt after all! 

This new edition is a small improvement on the plain Oreo split-pot, and one of the nicer Müller corners available. Try them if the corners are your bag, but if -like me- you prefer thicker style yogurts, then I suggest you make your own using Skyr/Greek Yogurt and crumbled strawberry Oreos.

NEW! Summer Inspired Apple & Elderflower Muller Light (ASDA)

Hurrah, it's Good Friday! I hope you're stuffing yourself silly with hot cross buns today, and have plenty of chocolate ready for Sunday! Don't forget, I've reviewed many of the most innovative 2017 hot x buns, all of which can be found here. 

As we can all appreciate, life is about the balance, and so in contrast to the aforementioned seasonal treats, today's review is of a limited edition, fat free, low calorie yogurt. Let's forget for a moment that I swore off Müller yogurts, after all I bought this pot at the same time as the new 'Goes Nuts' corner, and Apple & Elderflower is a combination I adore. 

Apple tends to be an under-used flavour when it comes to yogurts. Müller is the one exception to this however, having brought out the Apple Strudel pots in late 2015, which were rather good (for a Müller light). 

The yogurt was a pale green colour, and was just as runny as expected. Tucking in I discovered the apple flavour to be well executed, delivering the same refreshing fruitiness that I remember experiencing with the Strudel flavour. However, instead of the cinnamon in the Strudel edition, the apple in this new version was backed by notes of elderflower, which came through pleasantly. The resulting flavour combination was lovely, and different to any other yogurt currently available. I approved of the soft apple chunks too.

If it wasn't for the awfully thin nature of the Müller Lights I'd be inclined to give this yogurt a higher mark. As far as the range goes though, this is a brilliant new flavour that's pretty perfect for the summer months, and it's tastier than the Treacle Tart & Cherry Bakewell Cake Shop flavours.

NEW! Limited Edition Muller Corner Goes Nuts (ASDA)

Why do I do this? Please tell me you do it too. You're in the supermarket, you're hungry, you spot something new and vaguely interesting, and before you know it it's in your trolley. Then every time you open the fridge/freezer/cupboard you think 'why the badger did I buy that?'. Cue this Müller corner and the 10 for £3 deal at ASDA. Oops.

"Pistachio flavour yogurt with caramelised crushed almonds."

I mean hats off to Müller for creating something utterly different, but:
1. I'd never choose pistachio ice cream so why buy the yogurt? And...
2. I swore off buying Müller yogurts.

Yet there I was, begrudgingly retrieving it from the fridge last night 'to eat it up out of the way'. Even as a Müller fan there was NO way I was persuading Bert to try this flavour!

The colour of pistachio isn't exactly enticing is it? It reminds me of the walls in my primary school. As always, the smaller compartment was only half full, things weren't looking up.

Well. I take it back. The yogurt was refreshing. The pistachio was mild, but just about noticeable if you really paid attention. I'm still not keen on the wobbly consistency though- it's definitely runnier than it once was.

The crushed almonds however, were absofreakinglutely delicious. They were crispy and perfectly sweet. The roasting brought out the flavour and they were punchy little nibs that were jam packed full of flavour. In fact I'd have been more than happy to eat a bag of them on their own, but they made a super topping for the yogurt.

I really enjoyed this new limited edition corner, it's the best flavour that Müller have brought out in a long time. Now they just need to make a peanut and banana flavour one, or a cherry yogurt with the caramelised crushed almonds for a Bakewell themed corner. Meanwhile, I'll attempt to not dread the new Apple & Elderflower Müller Light that's sat in my fridge quite so much!

NEW! Müller Light Cake Shop Inspired Cherry Bakewell & Treacle Tart Yogurts (Iceland)

I almost swore off Müller yogurts. Every time I buy them I end up disappointed by their gelatinous insipidness. But then they went and released Cherry Bakewell & Treacle Tart inspired ones didn't they? My other half was on a diet when the pack of six first came out, and as a fan of both British desserts, was keen to try them. 

The only trouble was they were a consistent £3 in Iceland, and we just weren't prepared to pay that - especially when there are so many other good yogurts on the market. This week they're finally the subject of Iceland's weekly deal and are half price (the offer lasts until Tuesday 7th of Jan) so finally we got around to trying Müller's new offerings.

Cherry Bakewell
If you've been reading this blog for a while you'll appreciate that I'm an avid cherry Bakewell fan. I really hoped that the yogurt would taste of almond as well as cherry.

The bright pink yogurt was very runny, but then I expected that. What I wasn't prepared for was the accurate flavour representation. I could taste the sweet cherry & almond, and was certain that there was a butteriness that resembled pastry -although that might be my wishful thinking. The chunks of cherry that were swimming in the yogurt were a welcome addition too, and I found myself really enjoying this pot.

Treacle Tart
It might surprise you to hear that as far as desserts go, I'm not a huge treacle tart fan. I find the overwhelming sweetness and claggy texture too cumbersome and so it would never be my first choice on the dessert menu. It's Bert's favourite though and so he was really looking forward to trying this Müller light.

Well it's just a bit odd. There was a generic toffee flavour that barely concealed the taste of artificial sweetener. I didn't really get the connection to golden syrup though, and neither did Bert. To be honest, I'd rather have a standard Müller light.

At half price, they're not too bad and make a change to the normal flavours (especially if you regularly consume Müller lights) but I wouldn't pay 50p per yogurt -unless they released the Cherry Bakewell as a single. 

NEW! Chocolate & Hazelnut Müller Rice (Morrisons)

When's the last time you had a Müller Rice? It's only just dawned on me that I haven't bought one in months. Once upon a time I'd have them a few times a week for dessert, but since my ice cream addiction got out of hand I rarely buy them - although admittedly I'd got a bit bored with the flavours too. Every few months Müller bring out a new limited edition but more recently the company have got a little lazy and have just reinstated previously retired flavours (such as the banana & toffee, chocolate, maple syrup and salted caramel).

At long last they've come up with a new concoction though: chocolate and hazelnut. Short of releasing a peanut butter/peanut butter & chocolate variant*, a Nutelle-esque rice pud is about as up my street as it gets! The new flavour didn't come without concerns though -so far Müller's chocolatey pots have been pretty pants in my book. I haven't got along with the insipid sickliness of the sauce at the bottom, and even gave every single one of the chocolate & caramel flavour pots in the Going The a Distance multipack to Bert.

"Creamy dairy rice with smooth chocolate & hazelnut sauce (15%)."

I spotted the new Chocolate & Hazelnut Müller Rice at Morrisons and ummed and ahhed for a moment on wasting the money on a pot, then got a grip and reminded myself that it was just 69p (although they're now 50p in Sainsbury's) and bought one.

As always, I stuck my pud in the freezer for 45 mins before retrieving it. The sauce had behaved itself and had remained at the bottom, but I could still smell the sweet hazelnut scent emanating through the creamy rice topping.

We'll blow me down; the flavour was rather good! It was still a thin 'ice cream topping' style sauce, but the taste of hazelnut was at the forefront and complimented the chocolate. Perhaps it would have been better with a denser texture -akin to the consistency of the caramel core in Ben & Jerry's Karamel Sutra for example- but it was still much better than expected.

I then decided to take my chances and microwaved the second half. Now I always normally prefer my rice puddings ice cold, and so the second surprise came when i found that I loved this flavour warm too. In fact it was easier to imagine I was eating melted Nutella that way, and the chocolate mixed into the rice easily.

For a low fat (but high sugar!) dessert it tasted very indulgent, and this flavour is certainly one I'd buy again. Bravo Müller!

NEW! Pumpkin Spice Latte Style Müller Corner (ASDA)

I'd just about given up on Müller Corners after the pants Oreo Corner and equally disappointing Gold Edition this summer, when they released their most exciting sounding yogurt to date: Pumpkin Spice Latte. It wasn't that long ago that I was moaning about the lack of Autumnal products in the UK, and I've since realised that I simply spoke too soon! Of course we have Starbucks to thank for bringing pumpkin spice popularity to the UK; PSLs have been a regular seasonal addition here since 2012 (a good 9 years after it was launched in the USA I might add). 

Could and would Müller pull off the famous drink in yogurt form? 

"Smooth pumpkin spice sauce with creamy coffee flavoured yogurt."

My honest opinion? No. Sorry to disappoint you...

I really wish that Müller would return to their older method/recipes to make their yogurts in the corners. The liquidity of it was much more similar to their Müller lights than the corners of old. There was also an odd synthetic aftertaste which curdled with the coffee flavour somewhat -it was simply quite bizarre. 

It's a shame really, especially because the pumpkin sauce was really quite tasty -although completely different to what I expected: much runnier and sweeter. I'd have thought it was apple rather than pumpkin, but maybe that's just because it's a similar spice mix that I use in my crumbles. I imagine that the pumpkin sauce would make a wonderful base layer for Müller rices actually. Müller are you reading this?

Meh. Not one for me, and I won't bother again. Kev had a more favourable opinion of the new Corner however, so please do go and check out his review too. Also, here's a tip off if you are a Müller fan: all their single pots (lights, corners and rices) are currently all on a 12 for £3 offer at ASDA!

Müller Oreo Corner (Tesco)

I actually popped into Tesco to pick up a pack of the new Rolo 'Crack It' dessert pots, but got sidetracked when I spotted this new Müller yogurt... Oreo corner? No way! I might not have rated the Oreo Brownie very highly yesterday, but I couldn't leave this on the shelf. At 75p per pot -or 6 for £4- they're on the pricey side, but my inquisitive nature ruled out and into my basket one went.

I can't remember the last time I had a vanilla flavoured corner. My experience with Müller's range has been mixed; I wasn't fussed on their recent Gold Edition, yet was spellbound by their raspberry cheesecake brownie yogurt. To be honest if they hadn't marketed it as Oreo, and had labelled it as cookies instead, I doubt I would have given it a second glance. Yes, I'm a brand victim.

It looked just as expected, including the half-empty Oreo corner. There's no getting your money's worth here.

The yogurt was just as thin as it was with the Gold Edition. I swear that Müller must be watering them down. The thick, creamy yogurts that I remember of my childhood seem to be long gone. Fortunately I could taste the vanilla, but it tasted more 'flavouring' than 'extract' if you catch my drift. I'm glad to report that the Oreos were crunchy and crispy however and hadn't even begun to go limp or stale as I feared they might. 

The yogurt and biscuit combination worked rather well, but it was greatly let down by the yogurt's insipidness. If only it was a creamier, richer affair then this would be one special corner.

What a let down. If you like the look of this Müller corner then I highly recommend you crush up a couple of biscuits and pop them on your favourite yogurt and save yourself the 75 pence.

NEW! Banana & Toffee Müller Rice (Morrisons)

There are a couple of retired Müller Rice's that I yearn for. I'm already missing the Maple Syrup flavour, and I hope for the return of the Apple Strudel one day, but my hands down favourite ever Müller Rice has to be the banana and toffee. I've already harped on about how much I love banoffee this month, so I am eternally grateful to Instagram (and especially to nourishingnic) for bringing this 'new' going the distance flavour to my attention.

The only problem is that the banana and toffee is only available as a six-pack, combined with the rather repulsive chocolate and caramel flavour. Don't you hate it when companies do that? Fortunately my other half can stomach the chocolatey ones, so I popped down to Morrisons to pick up a pack -where all Müller six packs are currently on a two-for-£3 deal FYI.

The banana and toffee flavoured rice pudding was every bit as good as I remember. As always I enjoyed my pot ice-cold, and saved the banoffee sauce until the very end. 

The banana flavour was on the artificial side, foam-sweet-esque, but as an avid lover of banana nesquik -and in fact anything related to the fruit- I certainly didn't mind. If you're after a thick, buttery, Dulce de Leche style sauce you'll be bitterly disappointed by this Müller Rice as it's much sweeter and runnier than that -but I thought that it was nostalgically delicious and relished every last spoonful.

NEW! Müllerlight Copacabana: Passionfruit Orange & Lime Yogurt

It's been a while since I last reviewed a Müllerlight yogurt. The last one I wrote about was the divisive peanut & caramel one that I just couldn't get along with. I don't buy them very often but when Richard told me about the new Copacabana edition on Twitter, I was intrigued. Orange, passionfruit and lime isn't a flavour mix that I'd think of when it comes to yogurt, and I have to admit that it didn't sound particularly appealing either.

So why did I buy it? Well, the new Müllerlight kept playing on my mind for some reason, and when I was filling my basket with the 12 for £3 Müller promotion at ASDA I thought of no good reason to resist sampling it.

The yogurt was an insipid pale yellow, flecked with orange bits reminiscent of the zest you might come across in real orange juice. A lovely tropical scent hit my nostrils the moment the lid was peeled however, and I started to feel slightly less dubious about the new Müllerlight.

Well, this new Copacabama yogurt was an unexpected slice of sunshine! Shutting my eyes and ignoring the sound of the hail on the windows, I might be forgiven for thinking I was in sunnier climes. I had wrongly assumed that the citrus flavours would trounce the more delicate passionfruit, and they would be overcome still by the sickly artificial taste of Aspartame. Instead the symphony of tropical fruits were well balanced and rather refreshing. Yummy. 

What a lovely suprise Müller. I might not think that your new Gold corner or Chocolate & Caramel rice pot is up to scratch, but the new Copacabama Müllerlights is the perfect summer yogurt.

NEW Chocolate & Caramel Müller Rice (ASDA)

It's new Müller Rice time! This spring the company has relaunched two retired flavours (smooth chocolate and salted caramel) and released one entirely new flavour -which happened to be a combination of both old/new flavours- chocolate and caramel.

It's no secret how much I love that very flavour pairing, indeed it's obvious from my plethora of chocolate & caramel reviews (most recently M&S' new salted caramel and Belgian milk chocolate ice creams) so I don't need to tell you how excited I was to try this new Müller Rice.

As with the new Gold Müller Corners, the new rice pudding has Olympic themed packaging and has been named the 'Going The Distance Edition'. The title seems rather apt considering each pot contains over 25g of sugar and would therefore be likely to put the children on the ceiling for a few hours!

I'm not sure why I decided to warm the Müller Rice, as I normally like mine super cold -to the point where they're starting to freeze- but I figured that most people enjoy them warm so decided to join the crowd. I whacked it on high in the microwave until it started to bubble and the scent of sweet chocolate permeated the room -a good indication as to how yummy the dessert would surely be!

The creamy rice was as delicious as always; milky-sweet and comforting. The chocolate and caramel came from the pool of sauce at the bottom, which I gave a good mix into the rice above. 

Did you ever have Ambrosia rice topped with Lyle's ice cream sauces as a child? Well that's what this reminded me of. The caramel flavour was sickly sweet and lacked any thickness or depth of flavour, whilst the chocolate was overpowered and lost altogether. It's a shame really because it smelt so promising, but the dessert just tasted like the thinly-veiled sugar rush that it truly was. 

Maybe my dislike came from the temperature of the pud -it may well be one best served cold. Fortunately I bought another (all Müller singles are 12 for £3 in ASDA at the moment FYI) so I will update this post as and when I've braved it again. Have you tried the new Müller Rice? What do you think?

NEW! Gold Edition Müller Corner (Tesco)

It's been a while since I last reviewed a Müller corner, and the last one was rather special. I always look forward to the company's regular releases, so I was pleased to discover their latest selection of gold, Olympic themed yogurts. There are two flavours available in a multi-pack (which Katherine from Grocery Gems reviewed last month) and one single serve pot:

"Toffee shortbread flavour yogurt with milk chocolate coated & decorated digestives."

Toffee has to be one of my favourite yogurt flavours, so I was looking forward to trying this new addition to Müller's range. 

I was shocked to see how few gold digestive balls there were when I pulled back the lid. It's been a while since I last had a crunch corner, but I'm sure that they're usually more full than this? With no exaggeration the partition was less than 1/2 full -how disappointing Müller.

The yogurt tasted rather odd. I don't buy Müller Lights very often because I'm not keen on the gelatinous texture or artificial taste, and it's something I've never experienced that with their full-fat range before. The jelly-like consistency was off-putting, but the taste didn't pull it back either. Sure there was a strong toffee flavour, but it was followed by an unusual synthentic sweetener aftertaste that ruined the yogurt. What have you done Müller?

The saving grace came from the meagre supply of chocolate digestive balls. They looked rather stunning with their golden dusting, which was very similar to the coating of Galaxy's golden eggs. Thankfully they were crunchy with a well-rounded biscuit flavour, and would have much rather a pot of them on their own -without the distasteful yogurt.

As you may have gathered, I'm really not a fan of the new Gold Edition Müller Corner, and won't be buying it again. Have you tried it yet? What do you think?

New Peanut & Caramel Müllerlight (Tesco)

My stomach fell through the floor the other day when I saw the picture Katherine (from Grocery Gems) posted on Instagram of the new limited edition Müllerlight flavour: Peanut & Caramel. I briefly thought it was an April fools, but then realised that we're only just into January. I hot-footed it down to ASDA (where I had no luck) then on to Waitrose (who didn't even know what I was talking about) before ending up in Tesco -who had five single pots on the shelf. Being my usual greedy self, I grabbed all of the pots and rushed on home. 

The yoghurt was typically runny in Müllerlight's characteristic fashion, with a warm beige colour.

On to the tasting... The first thing I noticed was the artificial sweetness, which unsuprisingly lacked the depth and almost burnt-like tones of true caramel. The peanut came through after, but not in a rich peanut-buttery way, it also just tasted super synthetic. Oddly, the flavour reminded me of the warm drink 'Peanut Hottie' if you've ever had that before! The yoghurt had an odd fruity element, but I'm not sure where I got that from.

All in all, its a bit odd. It feels like Müller have sadly missed the mark slightly with this new limited edition yoghurt, but I'm hoping it grows on me as I make my way through my remaining four pots. If you're a dedicated peanut butter fan though, don't get your hopes up.

NEW Raspberry Cheesecake Brownie Müller Corner

How did I miss this new corner when reviewing Müller's new limited editions last month?

 Raspberry + Cheesecake + Brownie + Yogurt = Could it sound any more appetising? 

With so many components would Müller pull it off? 

"Cheesecake flavour yogurt with a raspberry layer and digestive & chocolate brownie pieces."

The yogurt was surprisingly good, and almost made me jump up and down with glee at the surprisingly rich and creamy tanginess of it that genuinely resembled cheesecake. The raspberry sauce was extremely sweet - more like jam- and despite not being quite as tart as I would have liked, worked well with the yogurt.. The brownie pieces packed a powerful cocoa punch for such small little cubes, and the digestive biscuits offered further texture to this wonderful little dessert. 

The components perfectly complemented each other, resulting in my favourite Müller product to date- it's safe to assume that I'll be making the most of this limited edition whilst it lasts!

New Limited Edition Apple Strudel Müller Light

Yesterday was national apple day; although I can't say that was the reason I bought these new Apple Strudel yoghurts. I like that Müller are an innovative brand, who don't rest on he laurels of their star flavours, but who continue to create and produce a variety of different products every year. 

I reviewed their other new Autumn limited edition 'light' yogurt last week- Key Lime Pie- but as a dessert Apple Strudel is much more my cup of tea. I love the traditional warming puddings that return to our dinner tables at this time of year; especially anything with Apple and/or cinnamon in. Producing a limited edition flavour that reflects both the time of year and this general shift in eating preferences seems like a a sensible idea to me. I read nibbles 'n' scribbles review a couple of days ago and her opinion was that  'if you like apple strudel you should definitely try this' which definitely made me all the more eager to try it for myself.

The first thing I noticed when peeling back the lid was the plentiful chunks of apple and cinnamon speckles that permeated the yoghurt. The yoghurt was runnier than I like, but akin to all the other flavours in this range. The chunks were substantial, and had a decent bite which then melted in the mouth. The cinnamon came through strongly but in a pleasantly sweet and warming way. 

As nibs also noted, there is no pastry in this yoghurt, so yet again Müller have been rather misleading in their product name, although not quite to the same extent that I think they are with their Key Lime Pie limited edition. 

I really enjoyed this yoghurt, and I think that yet again Müller have nailed creating a fairly luxurious tasting product without all of the associated fat or calories. I'd recommend it for any fans of Apple and cinnamon, and I'll be certainly buying more before Müller discontinue it to produce a new hybrid... Sticky toffee pudding or mince pie maybe? I sure hope so!

New Limited Edition Maple Syrup Müller Rice

It's that time of year again when Müller alter their product ranges. Last week I reviewed one of their Müller Light additions- Key Lime Pie, and today it's the turn of the new limited edition flavour Müller Rice- Maple Syrup. It's a bit strange to see this flavour advertised as the new limited edition, because until a few months ago it was part of their core range in a six-pack with Apple Strudel flavour Müller Rice. I really loved both of those flavours and I was gutted when they dumped it in favour of the 'red berry' six-pack which contains strawberry & cherry. 

In any case, I'm pleased to see that Müller have reintroduced a Maple product, because I love the taste of  the Canadian syrup; which I mentioned before when reviewing the new porridge by Quaker.

Müller Rice are a versatile dessert choice because you can enjoy them either hot or cold- and I like them both ways- but today I ate mine straight from the fridge. The rice was lovely; thick and perfectly creamy, which makes it feel more indulgent than it actually is (bonus)! There was a generously thick slick of syrup at the bottom, which although is clearly not of the highest grade, has the deep and decadent familiar Maple tang. I'm not sure if this new product has exactly the same recipe as before, but I am really pleased it's returned.

This flavour replaces the salted caramel rice pots, which I liked a lot, but fortunately for me I like the Maple even more so I shan't miss it too much. Please please please bring back Apple Strudel now Müller! In the meantime though, I have finally tracked down and bought a few of the new Apple Strudel Müller Lights, which I shall review over the coming days.

Limited Edition Key Lime Pie Müller Light

When doing the weekly shop this week I stopped in the yoghurt aisle at the Müller section as usual to pick an assortment of corners and rice pudding when this limited edition flavour caught my eye: Smooth Key Lime Pie.

I'm not normally a Muller light kind of girl as I find them quite runny and prefer thick Greek style yoghurt, but I found myself contemplating whether key lime pie yoghurt is an ingenious concept, or a repulsive concoction resulting from somebody's odd cravings. I decided that they only way I could end my quandary was by sampling the yoghurt for myself.

Let's get a few things clear first, I'm not a huge fan of key lime pie. I mean, I'd eat it if offered to me, but I'd never choose it at a restaurant- favouring anything banana, chocolate, caramel or coffee flavoured. I do like limes, but I tend to have them in a glass of Pepsi (and then suck them at at the end!) My nan used to constantly make lime jelly when I was a child, so perhaps I've just had lime overload.

I uncovered the dubious looking minty green yoghurt and wondered what I let myself in for. Sometimes food that looks the worst tastes the best though, right? My first mouthful was almost minty, but I think that's just because I'd linked the taste to the colour.

 By the second mouthful I was able to determine the citrusy lime flavour.. Which wasn't unpleasant. Half way through I realised that i was actually starting to enjoy the yoghurt. It was different and struck me as being refreshing (particularly after my ham and marmite sarnie.)

I do have a bone to pick with Müller's flavour name 'Key lime pie' which I think is borderline false advertisement because there's no pie in it. It's simply a lime yoghurt- I even checked the ingredients. I guess they figured that key lime pie flavoured yoghurt sounded more appetising.

Although I enjoyed trying something new and different, I won't be buying any more of this flavour. I hear however, that Müller have released an Apple Strudel variety which I'm definitely keen for! Hats off to them for constantly creating new and exciting flavour combinations instead of sticking to the tried and tested. Bravo.
